Working with reputable contractors and designers will minimize stress. Home renovation projects can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time, so understanding what to expect in terms of timeline and potential roadblocks can help you manage your expectations.

According to HomeAdvisor, the average cost of a kitchen renovation in the US is around $25,000, while a bathroom renovation can cost between $6,000 and $15,000. Room additions and ADUs can be much more expensive, with costs ranging from $50,000 to $200,000 or more depending on various factors. You should obtain multiple quotes from reputable contractors to get a realistic estimate of the costs involved.

Here are the four most common home renovation projects and what you should know about each:

(1) Kitchen Renovation:

• General Estimate of Time: 4–6 weeks

• The project entails Demolition, plumbing, and electrical work, installing new appliances and fixtures, flooring and backsplash installation, painting, and finishing touches.

• Potential Pain Points/Delays: Unforeseen structural issues, custom cabinetry, and countertop delays, and material and appliance delivery delays.

(2) Bathroom Renovation:

• General Estimate of Time: 3–4 weeks

• Project Entails: Demolition, plumbing, and electrical work, installing new fixtures and tiles, flooring installation, painting, and finishing touches.

• Potential Pain Points/Delays: Water damage or mold remediation, custom shower or bathtub delays, material, and fixture delivery delays.

(3) Room Addition:

• General Estimate of Time: 4–6 months

• Project Entails Building a foundation and framing, installing electrical and plumbing systems, insulation and drywall, flooring installation, roofing and exterior work, and interior finishes.

• Potential Pain Points/Delays: Permitting and zoning issues, weather delays, unforeseen structural issues, and material delivery delays.

(4) Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU):

• General Estimate of Time: 6–8 months

• Project Entails Building a foundation and framing, installing electrical and plumbing systems, insulation and drywall, flooring installation, roofing and exterior work, interior finishes, and kitchen and bathroom installation.
